China is a huge country, and is very different from region to region, so it depends on where you are going. It is generally very safe, but watch out for pick-pockets in larger cities especially shanghai. I have been to around 30 countries and the only trouble i had was i got swindled by a money changer in indonesia, and I got my pocket picked in shanghai in a large crowd. i felt my back pocket and it was unbuttoned, and by the time i got to a clearing in the crowd i went to button it, and it was gone.

But what I really recommend, and what I did myself, was take the FREE Japanese lessons given by Japanese volunteers. Most bigger cities offer these services and they're free. Try calling your City Office and see if they have such a program and the place and times. My city offers day AND evening classes. Not only can you learn Japanese from a native speaker but also customs, lifestyle and more. You'll meet a lot of nice people and make many friends and good connections in your city. I was really glad I took these! The people are so kind. They even taught me the bus and train routes, and so much more! Hope you can find such a program in the city you're in. i'd say 18 is a good age to go, but the legal age to do anything(smoke, drink etc) is 20. You may want to wait till 20 if you're a smoker. Although most of the age laws are very lax, they are somewhat making it harder for underage kids to get to those things. just my advice.

if all u plan is to shop, eat and sleep, u can try major cities like shanghai, guangzhou and beijing, won't cost u much cos' hotel and food is quite affordable there, USD500 will keep u warm and stuffed for a week. Budget for shopping is much depend on what u want to buy.
Ok it depends on you prefeences. Do you like hot or cold weather? Are you going fo the sceneary o the shopping? The south of China is hot and the north cold. Guilinn and Yangshou are a definate must if ygou love mountains and rivers, where Hinan or Baihai are the places to go if you like beaches. Go to hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing and Yangshou fo your shopping. Go north for the snow and the deserts. Go mid and west china for hot chillies in all the food.
Money. It depends on methods of travel and places you will go. If you going to only tourism centres it can be really expensive. Generally China is really cheap to get around on a little money or a lot. Depends on how long you want to stay also. Remember to bargin hard for everything.
Make sure you know some Chinese and their etiquettes otherwise you'll have a tough time in China. The GuangDong Province is a perfect place for both shopping and food. The capital Beijing has many famous places worth visiting. The money you should have depends on which place in China you want to visit, but $US600 should definitely be enough.

China is a huge country, and is very different from region to region, so it depends on where you are going. It is generally very safe, but watch out for pick-pockets in larger cities especially shanghai. I have been to around 30 countries and the only trouble i had was i got swindled by a money changer in indonesia, and I got my pocket picked in shanghai in a large crowd. i felt my back pocket and it was unbuttoned, and by the time i got to a clearing in the crowd i went to button it, and it was gone.

But what I really recommend, and what I did myself, was take the FREE Japanese lessons given by Japanese volunteers. Most bigger cities offer these services and they're free. Try calling your City Office and see if they have such a program and the place and times. My city offers day AND evening classes. Not only can you learn Japanese from a native speaker but also customs, lifestyle and more. You'll meet a lot of nice people and make many friends and good connections in your city. I was really glad I took these! The people are so kind. They even taught me the bus and train routes, and so much more! Hope you can find such a program in the city you're in. i'd say 18 is a good age to go, but the legal age to do anything(smoke, drink etc) is 20. You may want to wait till 20 if you're a smoker. Although most of the age laws are very lax, they are somewhat making it harder for underage kids to get to those things. just my advice.

if all u plan is to shop, eat and sleep, u can try major cities like shanghai, guangzhou and beijing, won't cost u much cos' hotel and food is quite affordable there, USD500 will keep u warm and stuffed for a week. Budget for shopping is much depend on what u want to buy.

Guilinn and Yangshou are a definate must if ygou love mountains and rivers, where Hinan or Baihai are the places to go if you like beaches. But what I really recommend, and what I did myself, was take the FREE Japanese lessons given by Japanese volunteers. Most bigger cities offer these services and they're free. Try calling your City Office and see if they have such a program and the place and times. My city offers day AND evening classes. Not only can you learn Japanese from a native speaker but also customs, lifestyle and more. You'll meet a lot of nice people and make many friends and good connections in your city. I was really glad I took these! The people are so kind. They even taught me the bus and train routes, and so much more! Hope you can find such a program in the city you're in. i'd say 18 is a good age to go, but the legal age to do anything(smoke, drink etc) is 20. You may want to wait till 20 if you're a smoker. Although most of the age laws are very lax, they are somewhat making it harder for underage kids to get to those things. just my advice.
Well, the best thing is to find a host family in Japan, you can contact Japanese Universities by email and they can advise you. If you success in that the host family will take care of you and they will pick you up from and to the Airport.

if all u plan is to shop, eat and sleep, u can try major cities like shanghai, guangzhou and beijing, won't cost u much cos' hotel and food is quite affordable there, USD500 will keep u warm and stuffed for a week. Budget for shopping is much depend on what u want to buy.
Ok it depends on you prefeences. Do you like hot or cold weather? Are you going fo the sceneary o the shopping? The south of China is hot and the north cold. Guilinn and Yangshou are a definate must if ygou love mountains and rivers, where Hinan or Baihai are the places to go if you like beaches. Go to hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing and Yangshou fo your shopping. Go north for the snow and the deserts. Go mid and west china for hot chillies in all the food.
Money. It depends on methods of travel and places you will go. If you going to only tourism centres it can be really expensive. Generally China is really cheap to get around on a little money or a lot. Depends on how long you want to stay also. Remember to bargin hard for everything.
